West Potomac Has Strong Showings at Legard Relays


The West Potomac Wolverines competed and had some strong showings at the Carolyn Legard Relays, the first major invitational of the 2013 outdoor track season. Competing mostly in a variety of relays, both teams accumulated a score of 19, with the boys team placing 10th out of 20 teams and the girls team placing 13th out of 19 teams.

in both the 4 x 800m and Distance Medley Relays. 

The girls team was led by the quartet of Katie Genuario, Kristi Snow, Lauren Price and Sophia Passacantando, who were members of the Lady Wolverines top placing relays.  Their 4x800m placed 3rd in a time of 9:53, and they came back later in the day to finish runner-up in the Distance Medley Relay.  In the only co-ed event of the meet, the Mixed 4x100m Throwers Relay, Afrakomah Danko and Gifty Adjei helped the relay place 5th out of 14 teams.  Also scoring for the girls team was the 4x1600m that finished 5th and was made up of Katie Murray, Zoe Smith, Allison McNulla and Laura Powell. Sophomore Maura Finn was the top performer for the girls in individual events as she placed 8th in the Freshman/Sophomore 1600m run.

Leading the way for the boys team was junior Mychael Gyamfi, who competed in 4 events.  Gyamfi individually placed 3rd in the Discus with a throw of 127-00 that qualified him for Districts.  Gyamfi and Josh Ransom had a combined distance of 214-08 to place them 3rd in the Men’s Discus Relay.  Gyamfi also closed strong in the anchor leg of the Mixed 4x100m for Throwers with Danko, Adjei and Olubunni Rotimi.

The Boys Distance Medley of Luca Halladay, Lozie Goolsby, Crispin Bernier and Corey Rosenberg placed 3rd in a solid time of 10:50.  Goolsby, Bernier and Rosenberg teamed up with Glenn Rushing to come back and finish 5th in the 4x400m with a new season best of 3:35.42.  Sophomores Nick Cucinotta, Cullen O’Boyle and Eric Turner competed well in the Boys Freshman/Sophomore 1600, with Cucinotta placing 2nd in a new personal best of 4:42 and O’Boyle right on his heels also in 4:42 for 3rd place, Turner was 9th in 4:47.

Next week will be busy for the Wolverines as they host their first and only home meet of the season on Wednesday (April 10th), then compete in the Northern Virginia Invitational on Friday and Saturday (April 12-13) at Robinson Secondary. Looking forward to the upcoming competitions and hoping for nice weather!
