Gymafi Wins Discus at Northern Virginia Invitational!

The Wolverines travelled to the site of this year’s Northern Region Championships (Robinson Secondary School) and competed in the Northern Virginia Invitational.  Over the course of the two day invitational there were a total of three Regional qualifying performances and six District qualifying performances for the West Potomac Track & Field program.

Once again junior Mychael Gyamfi led the way for the boys team, winning the Boys Discus in a new personal best of 142-03.  Gyamfi’s mark qualifies him for Regionals and currently ranks him first in the District.   In addition to his impressive results in the Discus, Gyamfi qualified for Districts on the track in the 100m and 200m and improved his District qualifying mark in the Shot Put to 43-04.  Sophomore Lozie Goolsby also qualified for Regionals in the 400m with a new personal best of 50.95 after finishing 5t, he also placed 5th in the High Jump.  The Wolverines added District qualifiers in the Long Jump (Diemorney Pierson-El  8th in 20-01), 800m (Corey Rosenberg 10th in 2:01.53), and the 1600m (Luca Halladay 11th in 4:29.77).

The Lady Wolverines had a regional qualifying performance from junior Katie Genuario in the 3200m.  Genuario moved up throughout the race to place 6th in a very fast field, her time of 11:23.34 was a solid opener.   Freshman Meredith Barber placed in the top 10 of her event after finishing 9th out of 40 girls in the Freshmen 1600 and lowering her personal best by 8 seconds.

Up next for the West Potomac Track & Field program is their Quad Meet against South County, W.T. Woodson and Lake Braddock on April 17th at South County.  To see all post-season qualifying mark (District, Regional & State) for the Wolverines this far please check the left-hand column of the blog.

Boys and Girls Team Win Quad Meet

In the only home meet of the season for West Potomac, both the boys and girls teams seized the opportunity and came away in first place.  The girls edged out Lake Braddock by four points, while the boys outdistanced T.C. Williams by 14 points.  It was unseasonably warm for early April, but the Wolverines made the most of the warmer temperatures and posted a number of season best times.

Ke'Shaun Davis was a double winner in the 100m and 200m

There were a total of seven event victories for the Lady Wolverines, including a win in each of the relays.  The girls 4x800m relay of freshmen Meredith Barber, Laura Powell, Lauren Airey and sophomore Zoe Smith in 11:05.04 got the meet started with a win.  Senior Ke’Shaun Davis was a double winner in the 100m and 200m, and also anchored the winning girls 4x100m with teammates  Mychelle Gyamfi, Taylor Highland and Brianna Boykin.  In addition Davis scored in the field as she was 4th in the Long Jump.  Gyamfi was right behind Davis, finishing second in both the 100m and 200m. The girls swept the first three places in the 200m as Boykin was 3rd.
Meredith Barber hands off to Laura Powell on the way to victory in the 4 x 800m relay
Sophomore Kristi Snow had a strong day as she won the 400m (1:00.94) well under the District standard and also placed 2nd in the Long Jump in her first attempt at the event.  Snow was the lead leg on the girls winning 4x400m relay along with Gabrielle Bomberg, Rhoda Tayki and Jessika Dickerson.  In the last individual event of the day, the 3200m, sophomore Melanie Bomberg ran away from the rest of the girls field to win be almost a minute.  The Lady Wolverines were well rounded in their scoring as Kelly Slatery was 3rd in the 100m hurdles, while Anna Smith (3rd) and Maddie Zdebski (6th) both cleared 4-8 in the High Jump.

On the boys side West Potomac also won seven events and had a strong day in the field events.  Diemorney Pierson-El won the Long Jump in a new season best mark of 19-04.5 and was 2nd in the High Jump.  Mychael Gyamfi won the Discus and placed 3rd in the shot put (43-2.5), giving him District qualifying marks in both throwing events.  Sophomore Lozie Goolsby won the High Jump and also won the 800m in his first attempt at the event.  Fellow sophomore Glenn Rushing won the 400m (52.04), significantly dropping his season best time and qualifying for Districts.

The Wolverines demonstrated depth with a number of underclassmen adding to the team score.  Freshman Brad Schaefer placed 2nd in the 100m and was the top scorer for the Wolverines in that event.  Sophomores Sam James (400m, 54.54) and Kelly O’Meara (110m hurdles, 17.34) were both 3rd in their respective events.  Freshman John Whitney moved up throughout his 3200m to close strong and placed 3rd overall.  In addition to the individual scorers the Wolverines won both the 4x100m (Pierson-El, Vaughan, Gyamfi,  Schaefer) and the 4x400m (Goolsby, Rushing, Gyamfi and James).

It was a good day overall for the West Potomac Track program and none of it could have happened without the tremendous support from our parent volunteers.  Thank you to all the parents who worked through the heat at the concession stand, gate keeping, scorekeeping and timing.  You all helped the meet run smoothly and we truly appreciate you taking the time to make our one home meet of the year be as good as it could have been.  We are looking forward to the rest of the season given the amount of improvement and growth we’ve seen in our first couple meets and we feel very fortunate to have the level of support that this program enjoys.

Thanks to Sue O'Boyle for taking photos of the meet, which can be found here.
