Lozie Goolsby led the way this past weekend at the TJ
Penultimate with a winning high jump of 6’3 to make the States automatic qualifier. He joins Mychael Gyamfi as the two state qualifers thusfar for the spring track and field season. Goolsby also placed 5th
in the 400. Michael Gyamfi won another invitational, throwing the disc 138’7.
Other members scoring team points were the Girls 4x100 Michelle Gyamfi,
Ke’Shaun Davis, Aniya Taylor and Rhoda Takyi finishing fourth, Allison Mcnulla
finishing 5th in the girls 1600 meters in a time of 5:32.62 and
Boomi Rotimi finishing 6th in the shot with a throw of 41’1.

Gymafi Wins and State Qualifies in the Discus at Nike Spring Invitational
West Potomac placed 7th in the girls team
scores and 10th in the boys team competition at this year’s Nike
Spring Invitational. The Wolverines made
the most of the evening meet, with athletes continuing to improve as the team
gears up for the championships season in less than two weeks. Mychael Gyamfi led the way as he became the
first member of both teams to qualify for states this season, winning the
Discus with a new personal best of 153-00.

Leading the way for the girls team was Katie Genuario,
who almost became the second member of the team to qualify for states. Genuario lowered her regional qualifying time
down to 11:15 and was only 2 seconds shy of states. Ke’Shaun Davis was 2nd in the 100m
and also lowered her regional mark down to 12.60 and came back to finish 4th
in the 200m.
Placing in the top six for the boys team was freshmen
Brad Schaefer, who was second in the Freshmen 100m. Lozie Goolsby was second in the High Jump as
he improved his regional mark to 6’2” and also placed fourth in the 400m.

Up next for the Wolverines will be the Southern Track
Classic in Richmond, VA, where the accepted entries for West Potomac are
Mychael Gymafi in the Discus and the girls and boys 4x800m relays. The last invitational is May 11, the TJ
Penultimate, which will serve as a last chance qualifier before Districts.

The girls were second to defending District &
Regional champions South County and the boys were third as the Wolverines
wrapped up their regular season for 2013.
In total West Potomac came away with 6 event victories and saw a host of
athletes put forth personal best performances.
Event winners were the girls 4x100, Ke’Shaun Davis in the
Long Jump, Brianna Boykin in the Triple Jump, Brad Schaefer in the Long Jump,
Glenn Rushing in the 400 and Meredith Barber in the 1600m. Barber led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Lady
Wolverines as fellow freshmen Laura Powell and Lauren Airey were second and
third respectively. Davis had a strong
day as she was also runner-up in the 100m and 200m. Mychelle Gyamfi was right behind Davis in the
Long Jump as she placed second and Slatery took runner-up in the Triple Jump.
Sophia Passacantando was second in the 800m, placing runner-up only to State
Champion Felecia Majors. Kelly Slatery was third in the 100 hurdles and High
Jump.
The boys team also had several performers place in the
top three throughout the meet. Lozie
Goolsby cleared 6’0” in the High Jump to get 2nd. Kelly O’Meara was second in the 110 hurdles.

Results for South County Quad Meet and Lake Braddock Hall of Fame Invitational
The Wolverines
traveled to Lorton last Wednesday to take on South County, Lake Braddock and
Woodson. WP distance runners had a very fine showing from both boys and girls.
Leading the way and placing first Girls 4x800 Gabby Bomberg, Lauren Airey, Kelsey O'Hern & Laura Powell, Leading from start to
finish. Boys 4x800 finishing first James McNulla, Brian Spitnale, Michael Bell
& Austin Whitney...Bell took the lead on the 3rd leg of the relay. Other
top distance performances were 2nd place finishes from Maura Finn in
the 1600m in 5:45.24 and Laura Powell in the 3200m 13:15.24. Shreyak Khanal ran the 1600m in 4:53.84 for a
new personal best.
On Saturday West Potomac found the
going a little tougher with Ke’shaun Davis running Regional qualifying marks in
both the 100 and 200 and anchoring a 6th place finish in the 4X100.
Katie Murray 11:43.17 finished 3rd in the 3200. Katie Genuario 5th
in the mile at 5:14.33 and Kristi Snow running a 1:01.11 in the 400. Scoring
for the boys were Lozie Goolsby coming in 7th in the High Jump and
Luca Halladay 8th in the 3200m with a District qualifying time of
9:51.21.
The WP Track and Field team will
be back in action next week with the 4x800m relays at the Milestat Invitational
and the full squad returning in the last Quad of the season at T.C. on May 1st.
